ABSTRACT

Nuclear weapons vary considerably in their complexity. The design of modern versions of the nuclear weapons which destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki would cause today’s nuclear scientists and engineers no difficulty – virtually all the information required is in the open literature. The designers of this basic type of nuclear weapon would be so confident that their weapons would work that they would be satisfied with nonnuclear testing. The weapons could, therefore, be fabricated and deployed clandestinely.
