ABSTRACT

The winter campaign of 1941/42 on the northern and northwestern sectors of the front of the active Red Army provided extensive and, for the most part, useful experience in the use of ski troops. The experience gained by using ski formations included the practical resolution of the following problem; bringing ski troops up to strength and giving them combat training. The combat training of ski units was not conducted systematically during breaks in combat activity. The equipment and manning tables of individual ski units have to be re-examined, and some changes in their organization need to be introduced. The principal means of communication in ski units should be radio, mobile means, and signalization. The most important targets for small ski units in the enemy rear are headquarters, communication centers, command points, and rear establishments. Conclusions concerning the combat employment of ski units should be considered by the commander of fronts, armies and formations.
