ABSTRACT
This chapter deals with the local adaptation of the German Turnen Movement in southern Brazil from the mid-nineteenth century until the Second World War. The cultural migration of Turnen is prefaced a short description of German immigration into southern Brazil — one of the most important land movements in nineteenth century South America — and involves a detailed analysis of documents associated with sample institutions of the period.
