ABSTRACT

As an ex-British Imperial territory Singapore still exhibits many features resulting from British influence. Sport, one of the most pervasive cultural exports of the British, played an important part in the new colony. This chapter examines the emergence and development of modern sport in Singapore, and particularly the role of the dominant racial group, the Chinese, in this process. Chinese cultural imperialism ran parallel to the apparently dominant British version. The sport of modern Singapore is thus a complex creolized form of the residual culture left by the British.
