ABSTRACT
It is commonly argued by both academic analysts and other commentators that parties’ policies on electoral reform are decided upon the basis of their self-interest. However, by this criterion, some parties appear to be acting against their interests. This article explores the nature of the main parties’ policies on electoral reform and the current state of opinion in the parties, and tries to establish a framework of key determinants which explains the apparent contradiction between party interest and policy.
