ABSTRACT

Serbia’s southern province of Kosovo presents a unique context for the study of autonomy and identity in plural societies in which two sides, Albanians and Serbs, have made maximal demands. This contribution presents a conflict resolution arrangement than can be best described as mixed autonomy. In this arrangement, the issues of Albanian territorial aspirations will be balanced with the powerful ethnic identity markers that Kosovo and certain areas within Kosovo symbolize for Serbs. This mixed autonomy solution might satisfy the bulk of Albanian territorial and demographic demands and can also reassure the cultural identity needs of the Serbs.
