ABSTRACT
This essay discusses the different meanings and types of autonomy and their relationship to the culture and identity of ethnic or religious minorities. Referring to selected historical experiences, it deals with the impact of autonomy on the political system and on society as a whole. Finally it raises questions and advances a number of hypotheses about the conditions under which autonomy, whether territorial or functional, is or should be granted and about its consequences for the integrity and stability of the state.
