ABSTRACT

The Changing Face of Football: Stadiums and Communities

John Bale

Football stadiums have traditionally been sources of benefits and disbenefits for the communities in which they are located. Various developments have occurred in British football since the implementation of the Taylor Report, following the Hillsborough disaster. These developments include stadium relocations, in situ expansion of stadiums, the diversification of stadium activities and the emergence of the Federation of Stadium Communities. Despite these innovations the negative effects of football (namely, spill-over effects such as traffic congestion, crowding and hooliganism) have not been eliminated.
