ABSTRACT

Global Sport and the Migration Patterns of France ’98 World Cup Finals Players: Some Preliminary Observations

Joe Maguire and Bob Pearton

Elite labour migration is an established feature of the sporting ‘global village’. Research examining this migration has established that a shifting set of interdependencies exist which contour the migrant trails of world sport. These interdependencies are multi-faceted and incorporate economic, historical, social and cultural factors. This study seeks to contribute to ongoing research about talent migration in world football through a case study of one area of this migration – the very élite level. In this respect a preliminary study of the sporting origins and destinations of players participating in the 1998 World Cup Finals in France has been undertaken.
