ABSTRACT

European Law and Football: Who’s in Charge?

Ken Foster

This essay discusses the impact of European law on football. It analyses the right of footballers to move clubs freely and the right of clubs to play wherever they wish. It describes the emerging policy of the European Commission in applying European competition law to football. The piece concludes that the Commission will recognize that sporting goals can sometimes only be achieved by anticompetitive measures but nevertheless such deviations from the normal legal rules will continue to be carefully monitored.
