ABSTRACT

Modularity in Britain is now some 20 years old and my own institution (formerly as Oxford Polytechnic) was associated with modularity from the outset. Oxford Brookes University now has 11,000 students, 70 per cent of whom are following modular courses primarily at undergraduate level, where over 70 single and double fields of study are offered. Throughout this period, and more especially in the past five years, we have sought to resolve an apparent contradiction. The problem is how, within binding resource constraints, we should reconcile increasing student choice and empowerment and also ensure that students have the opportunity to develop their capability and skills.
