ABSTRACT

The introduction chapter that overviews the subsequent chapters discussed in this book. Modular programme in line with institutional policy, emphasis on outcomes, has raised awareness of issues of both content and delivery in teaching. Modularity generates concern about continuity and coherence in the experience of single and combined honours students in biochemistry and other biological modules. The pilot project, an integrated approach to skill development and tutorial programmes seemed the best vehicle for delivery. The institutional staff development facilities and the Enterprise in Higher Education Initiative provide resources of which interested staff may take advantage for innovative curriculum development in core skills areas. Department core skills are most effectively developed in a system which integrates them into the subject, explicitly identifying how they can be developed. Tutors observed an improvement in motivation which they perceived as stemming from clear student ownership of their own skills development programme, and an understanding of the relationship between core skills and final degree classification.
