ABSTRACT

This chapter examines by floating a departmental scheme of training of modular teaching structure type, for a small third year science class students. At the end of the set of classes, students who did attend considered that they had learned a great deal, feedback sheets were predominantly positive. A year ago, with our science degree courses having been 'modularized', the department was seeking new modules. So again we found ourselves offering to run classes in the personal skills arena. It covers a wider range of activities, from IT in computer rooms to tasks in the shops of the city centre. Moreover, most students saw the module as being useful, not oddball, even when aspects of it. A variety of modalities were used: talking in equal-time pairs to one other person; addressing the whole class; and interviewing and being interviewed through Individual classes in the 'Communication and presentation skills' module.
