ABSTRACT

A great deal of research has been undertaken on the relationship between research and teaching in higher education. In looking at this research, we came to the conclusion that it appeared to have reached an impasse and was no longer contributing usefully to the debates about the role of teaching and research in higher education. We thought that it might be more productive to consider the relationship between learning and research rather than teaching and research as a starting point. In the workshop on which this chapter is based, we wanted to present our thoughts on work which had been done principally in the USA and Australia on the relationship between teaching and research and then to explore with participants the links between learning and research.
