ABSTRACT
Recent changes in the British education system are increasingly affecting mathematics teaching at university level. In particular, changes in public examinations at 16 plus and, to a lesser extent, 18 plus, together with the rapid expansion in student numbers have meant that lecturers concerned with first-year undergraduate classes have a much larger and less homogeneous group of students to deal with than was previously the case.
