ABSTRACT
The second half of the twentieth century can be presented as a time of considerable growth in university education in Britain. Many new universities have been built, and many other institutions have become universities. Despite this development and diversity, however, the dominant style of undergraduate courses has not changed. The majority of university students follow a three-year honours degree programme in a named academic subject. For these students, flexibility in course provision is of little significance.
