ABSTRACT

The research that colleges and universities engage in covers a very wide spectrum, including basic research into fundamental problems as well as entrepreneurial work, often contracted by a particular customer. Insider research is a form of participant research. It is principally about understanding and improving practice within the researcher's institution. The series aims to provide the people with a framework of ideas and starting points for research which can be carried out alongside their current practice. Reflective practice is about taking account of the viewpoints of others and the long- as well as the short-term consequences of an action. Because it is almost impossible to isolate variables in real educational situations, it is seldom possible to say that a particular stimulus caused a particular effect. It is almost impossible to prove anything in education. The chapter also provides an overview of the key concepts discussed in this book.
