ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors explore equal opportunities issues as these relate to student selection. The kind of students an institution attracts and selects is a significant factor in determining its nature and culture. Selecting students may seem a simple process of receiving applications and making decisions on the basis of qualifications, qualities, references and perhaps interview. Some institutions are looking outward when considering recruitment, and in particular establishing relationships with 'feeder' institutions which guarantee progression for students between institutions and levels. Applications systems vary from those run by the institution to those using national clearing systems. Vocational qualifications, preparing students for actual jobs or for general vocational areas, have held a strong place in the education of 16-19-year-olds and also feature in higher education. The purpose of this chapter is to explore ways of obtaining a sample of people to be sent questionnaires or to be interviewed.
