ABSTRACT

Sex differences in educational achievement have been variously defined and explained. There are biological, cultural, sociological and interactive explanations. The norms of society relate to the roles that men and women perform. Roles are the structurally given demands and actions as they apply to individuals. There is little educational research into the effects of sexual orientation on the educational experience of bisexual, gay and lesbian students. The experience of men and boys in education has only recently become a matter for common concern. Interview a group of male students who are studying non-traditional, vocational subjects (for example, nursing or education). Women are now succeeding at all levels of the educational system. Effective policies are likely to have criteria for success. Gender is an important issue for research. It often involves researching sensitive issues that require discussion and forethought.
