ABSTRACT

SUMMARY Although the value of illustrations and colour in learning materials is widely accepted, the guidelines available to designers are frequently based on personal opinions. The guidelines for illustrations are often the result of investigations into the use of images to support text in books or other paper-based products. Colour guidelines are obtained from work into colour television, 35mm slides and cockpit displays. This chapter reports on research undertaken by Sheffield University into the use of graphics, colour and text in the screen design of computer-based learning materials.
