ABSTRACT

The learning society is certainly an ideal for which we are striving (Jarvis, 1990; Field, 1996). It demands an integrated system wherein education takes place in a new social, economic and political context. This should be a society which guarantees any kind of learning, at any time, to any population throughout its lifetime (Jarvis, 1990). The characteristics of the learning society are as follows:

continued learning throughout one's life;

encouragement of the learner's responsibility for their own progress;

emphasis on the positive aspects of learning;

equal value attached to knowledge no matter how acquired.
