ABSTRACT

In this chapter the authors argue that education networks create new learning opportunities that require a new supporting pedagogy. They cite the experience of the Association Global View (AGV), an international network supporting online learning in business and management. Among educators, 'distance education' typically means providing educational services only to learners who are not physically at the institution's site. When institutions are reinvented, leaders of educational institutions can harness technology to seize opportunities that allow learners to seek knowledge outside of the institutional setting. Critical thinking ability can be developed through appropriately structured collaborative learning environments. The motivational aspects of collaboration on learning have been discussed in the literature. The new pedagogy, where the networked learner was partnered with the instructor in the creation and implementation of the content delivery, generated numerous requests for information from students to AGV staff. A student and/or university user fee system was created to fund AGV's operational costs.
