ABSTRACT

This chapter describes aspects of Integrating Learning Design in cd rom and Multimedia and extends the model to include e-learning. It attempts to combine the application of pedagogy to materials development with the rich processes that e-learning allows. The programme aimed to help people to provide support to learning centre staff and to basic skills learners by e-mail, telephone or online discussion. Learning design describes the assumptions and processes that developers use to decide the characteristics of the material they make. A 'deficiency model' teacher may show behaviour that is caring, gentle and tender, but if the learner is operating with a competence model, this can seem patronizing. Developers must know the theory behind their learning model. E-learning brings us a new set of characters and associated metaphors. E-learning is different from traditional forms, and demands new pedagogical skills and a fluency with technology which will be new to many teachers and trainers.
