ABSTRACT

The quest for a pedagogy for online learning is the latest stage in an endeavour that goes back more than 50 years. The Arenicola report reveals that the majority of course designers and developers in the corporate sector lack the skills that are fundamental to the successful production of learning materials, in whatever medium they are working. Course-design skills for online and other forms of open and distance learning will be brought to bear more effectively when applied within a model and based on a workable theory of instructional design. Course designers working on the development of any of prevailing models need to acquire a new range of skills. A similar development opportunity linked to an acceptable professional accreditation would be one step towards improving the poor standards of course design that are so widespread throughout adult education and occupational training.
