ABSTRACT

The Effective Academic is written with the early to mid-career academic in mind. It considers selected aspects of academic life and work from the perspective of those with, or aspiring to, leadership and management responsibilities, perhaps of a course team or large research project, a head of group, leader of departmental teaching or research, an aspiring head of department, or those who have greatness thrust upon them. The Effective Academic is divided into five parts. The turbulent environment' considers three essential elements of the context within which UK higher education is located, namely the international environment for higher education, the context and its impact on institutions, and the student perspective on these arenas. The selective approach highlights issues for those taking on the management of courses and teaching, including matters relating to curriculum design, introducing more information technology into learning and teaching, learning from the British quality assurance experience and teaching students with disabilities.
