ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a perspective of the student experience in higher education, with emphasis on current imperatives such as student finances, tuition fees, the need to work while studying and the accumulation of debt. It also draws attention to how students unions are taking a greater involvement in improving and enhancing all aspects of student life in higher education, going beyond their well-known roles in welfare and representation, moving into newer territories such as the development of skills for the workplace and taking part as a consumer in enhancing the quality of student learning. The experience that students have on courses is a key consideration for the institution and is always an important element of the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education Subject Reviews and audits. Students unions offer a range of services which can include retail, bars, childcare facilities, print shops, advice and guidance, entertainment and facilities for clubs and societies.
