ABSTRACT

Constructivist theory sees the learner as maker of his or her own knowledge. Content being taught is interpreted by the learner in an effort to make sense of the information. Past experiences and present needs and interests influence how the learner views the content. An effective teacher provides content in such a way as to tap into the learner’s experiences, needs, and interests. Together teacher and learner use repeatedly the process of discussion and reflection to develop more complete understanding. Participation of other learners with their perspectives and opinions helps to enrich the process and increase the depth of knowledge.
