ABSTRACT

I will begin with some personal reflections about the link between identity and landscapes. In the school year 1993/94 I was fortunate enough to have a full year sabbatical, my first, and to spend much of that year travelling in the South Pacific. During that period I had a lot of time to reflect upon my identity. Indeed, my daughter had given me a wonderful quote stating that ‘the purpose of a sabbatical was to allow you the time to BE the person you had BECOME’. So, while I was in places like Thailand, Australia and New Zealand, I looked back and reflected upon my experiences and perceptions and thought about my dreams and goals.
