The Wednesday, March 28, 1979, edition of The State News, Michigan State University’s official student newspaper, proclaimed headlines such as “Spartans Shoot to Kill” and “Magic’s the Word, Not the Bird” as the paper boasted triumphantly of “the Spartans 75–64 victory over the previously undefeated Indiana State University to claim the NCAA title.” 1
