ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses one component of a strategy for the design of curricula and instruction that can help us begin to meet the challenge of teaching thinking while also covering a sufficient range of skills and content. A major challenge for educators is to provide opportunities for sustained thinking about important areas while at the same time helping students acquire a range of skills and knowledge that will prepare them for lifelong learning. A perusal of typical curriculum materials suggests that there is considerable room to provide students with opportunities to learn multiple areas of knowledge simultaneously. Technology is also a powerful tool for effective communication of ideas, which is important for all areas of inquiry. A final reason for attempting to integrate curricula involves a special case of the inert knowledge problem that is particularly important — the idea of approaching problems from multiple perspectives.
