ABSTRACT

The study reported here is based on 300 written texts in the Catalan language by children 6 to 9 years of age who were in first, second, and third grade in a state school in Barcelona. Our research concerns a particular type of text: the newspaper article written by the press. In analyzing our data, we have tried to answer the following questions:

Are there linguistic forms and lines of organization specific to news texts?

What intrinsic linguistic restrictions and obligatory features are learned by children when dealing with this type of material?

What new phenomena are revealed when small children write in this genre, given that this is a rare occurrence?
