ABSTRACT

Given the momentous developments in information technologies, the issue of literacy requires a rethinking. Such rethinking is linked closely to the phenomenon of postmodernism, because postmodernist insights help to provide some of the most enlightening analyses of these developments (see, e.g., Poster, 1990). However, when both the development of new information technologies and the phenomenon of postmodernism are involved, one encounters highly complex and varied issues. Consequently, it is impossible to cover the total ground. An attempt is made to address those circumstances that especially pertain to literacy. To provide the necessary context for such a discussion, first we should consider the characteristics of modernism as they relate to the topic at hand.
