ABSTRACT

This introductory chapter frames our topic by addressing briefly three broad questions. First, how does “gender and fair assessment” fit into the larger social context of testing and such obviously related issues as gender equity and assessment reform? Second, what do we mean by test fairness? Judging the fairness of tests is a complex topic in its own right and is not defined that helpfully and consistently in professional literature. Finally, what did this study involve, and how does its telling unfold in succeeding chapters?
