ABSTRACT

Like many mathematics teachers, I was always one of the “good” math students in elementary and high school I understood most of the work after the first explanation. I genuinely liked all of the rules my teachers presented in the traditional lecture format. Mathematics was simple to me: There are a lot of very specific rules that cannot ever be broken and, if you follow these rules, you will get the right answer, always. I liked that. It wasn’t like my English or history courses, where different interpretations were possible. There was always a right answer in math class. I took notes during class lecture and worked through all of my drill and practice homework with zeal.
