ABSTRACT

This chapter explores women's perceptions of the city. It uses a feminist perspective to consider to what extent the city fulfills women's wishes and dreams. The city as a place where goods are manufactured and consumed welcomes the consumer woman. As a housewife, her work is not recognized by dominant society as part of social production. Changes have occurred slowly in the democratization of urban public space. Housing is part of a greater issue involving social inequalities and the standard of living. The issue of security has been present in all the meetings with women. Children, people without cars, and old people need security. An urban environment responsive to needs that women have as a result of the various roles they presently play and, at the same time, responsive to the desire for flexibility, equality, and autonomy in their lives remains a dream under construction.
