ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the actions of women, particularly women of the nonindustrialized Third World nations, to live healthily and in a healthy environment. In Bhopal, India, women continue to protest Union Carbide operations, educate nationally and internationally on the dangers they present, go to court about various related issues, and look for programs to heal those affected by the emissions. Marta Benavides of El Salvador carries out an initiative, the Women's Environment and Development Program, for people's land and human rights, environmental education, and ecological action for sustainability. Women met at the regional level to work on the development of the Platform for Action decided during the Fourth World Conference on Women and at similar meetings for the other UN conferences and summits. The Asia-Pacific Women Action Network, in the context of the Social Summit, submitted a formal declaration to be placed in the docket of documents.
