ABSTRACT

Chinese women have experienced three historical periods that can be divided into three stages: before 1949; from 1949 to 1978; and since 1978. Social reform in China has not exerted a great pressure on intellectual women. In the early twentieth century, quite a few upper-class women went to Japan to study. They were deeply impressed by the feminist trend they found and began to consider Chinese women's liberation. Development in women's education in China has been the growing emphasis on education for self-realization. The government pays considerable attention to the health of women and children. The Special Group for Women and Children of the Internal Affairs Judicial Committee under the National People's Congress was established in April 1989. The Electoral Law improved the condition of Chinese women's political participation considerably by permitting them to run for public office. China transformed itself substantially during the socialist period of its history, and, in that process, the status and condition of women improved.
