ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an annotated bibliography comprising 60 books and reports, which is included for those wishing to pursue more in-depth study of any of the selected topics related to the women in the Third World. Jayawardena analyzes internal and external forces affecting the changing nature of feminism in the context of nationalist struggles during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in 12 Eastern countries. Using analytical frameworks from regime and organization theories, Kardam explores how the international Women's movement has tried to alter norms within the development-assistance regime and how the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the World Bank, and the Ford Foundation have responded. The chapter explores the state of the women's movement worldwide, the history of colonization processes, the witch hunt and housewifization, women's work in the international division of labor, violence against women, and the relationship between women's liberation and national liberation struggles.
