ABSTRACT

Like i derived by E-Mutation, underlying Iii before inserted IY I surfaces as an unstressable vowel only where underlying unstressable vowels retain this status. Thus Iii surfaces as a stressable vowel in etot-e/am{-yek (extreme-laugh-11) 'we (du. exc.) laugh really hard (Conjunct),' where the last preceding vowel is an unstressable a. (Compare etot-elami-t (extreme-laugh-3AN) 'he laughs really hard (Conjunct).') A similar situation holds in i-stem nouns: stem-final Iii surfaces as an unstressable vowel in {p{si-yil rv {p{si-hil (switch-33IN) 'switches, whips,' but as a stressble vowel in wzkpz-yik rv wikpz-hik (brown.ash-33PROX) 'pieces of brown ash' and apas{-yil rv apasz-hil (stick-33IN) 'sticks'; cf. ht-zp{si-m 'his switch,' n-wz'kpi-m 'my brown ash,' ht-apasi-m 'his stick.'
