ABSTRACT

Sir, my want of erudition does not permit me to examine “whether the tragedy of Sophocles makes its imitation by its speech, cadence, and harmony: what Aristotle expressly calls agreeably seasoned speech.” Nor will I discuss “if it is a play of the first type, simple and involved: simple because it has only one simple catastrophe; and involved because it has the moment of recognition with the peripeteia.’’
