ABSTRACT
Literacy is no doubt an important component of communication and a necessary skill for adjustment and socialization. The technical ability to read and write does not guarantee the benefits or objectives for which literacy programs are designed. Literacy is but a single means (although a very important one) for obtaining new information from the environment and for expressing one’s own ideas. Most intervention programs designed to improve literacy focus on the development of abilities and skills necessary for reading and writing.
