ABSTRACT

Tracking, the assignment of students to instructional groups on the basis of ability or academic achievement, attempts to facilitate instruction and promote learning by enabling teachers to gear instruction to the ability levels of their students. Advocates of tracking argue that when students are instructed in ability groups, educators can adapt the content and pace of instruction to meet their students’ learning needs. As a result, the students do not become bored or discouraged but rather remain actively engaged in the instructional process.
