ABSTRACT

Under Communism, all business and technical details associated with any theatrical enterprise had to be “organized” in the same way that meat, light bulbs, typing paper, or any other necessary items of daily life were. From post-Martial Law demoralization to post-Communist get-upand-go, the participants in English language plays at Gdansk University have undergone a remarkable transformation, just as the society they live in has undergone a transformation. One of the founders of a fifties student theatre group characterizes the flavor of Stalinist student culture: Everyone without exception took part in the cultural movement. Each student grouping had to have some kind of cultural club and repertory. The Maybe Theatre has produced Blood Brothers, Canterbury Tales, Alice in Wonderland, and a Christmas pantomime to date. From post-Martial Law demoralization to post-Communist get-upand-go, the participants in English language plays at Gdansk University have undergone a remarkable transformation, just as the society they live in has undergone a transformation.
