ABSTRACT

Discussion among the authors of this volume centered on several recurrent issues, which are summarized here. The asymmetry of A and W implies that A responses may readily become integrated into complex forms, while W responses may be difficult to integrate or elaborate, due to their interruptive nature. The W-system habituates, while the A-system may habituate only when it contacts the stimulus. If the stimulus is reinforcing, as is likely in the A system, then A responses will be strengthened. The asymmetry of A and W systems may be reflected in the asymmetry of the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems.
