ABSTRACT
Mary Lou Williams was one of the most remarkable jazz musicians of the twentieth century. 1 Her accomplishments as a composer, arranger, pianist, bandleader, social worker, and educator give her a unique place in American culture. As an African-American woman, she persevered in a male-dominated field, working past prejudice of all types to become an international star as well as a major force in music.
