ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the reflective judgment model. It discusses the several developmental parameters, based on research, that influence learning to be reflective. It then suggests possible methods that educators can use to promote reflective judgment at developmental points. The chapter describes a program that was designed to promote development. The reflective judgment model describes changes in assumptions about sources and certainty of knowledge and how decisions arc justified in light of the assumptions. Research on the reflective judgment model has several implications for education. Research on the reflective judgment model has shown that students at different ages and educational levels enter the learning environment with markedly different assumptions about what and how something can be known and how to make judgments in light of the assumptions. Development occurs slowly; and, it is unlikely that young adults, even given the best educational environment, will very often use the kind of reflective judgment that Dewey idealized.
