ABSTRACT

Asian American politics is not a new phenomenon, but it is becoming an increasingly significant focus. Perhaps at no other period have so many individuals and organizations participated in the American political system, and in activities connected with the affairs of Asian countries. Asian Americans have demonstrated that they have the commitment, organizational skills, and fiscal resources to advance their concerns and to confront societal issues that are damaging to their interests. 1 What has become the routine election of Asian Americans to public office in Hawaii has become less novel on the U.S. mainland with the election and appointment of Asians to federal, state, and local positions. 2
