ABSTRACT
The Tokyo District Court recently handed down a judgement which is generally considered to have considerable importance for the future of primary and secondary education in Japan. It concerned the operation of the system whereby the Ministry of Education (Mombushō) examines all textbooks used in primary and secondary schools and permits only those which are approved to be used in schools as textbooks.
