ABSTRACT

The City of Holyoke is located in the Western part of Massachusetts just north of Springfield between the mountains of Western Massachusetts and the Connecticut River. Holyoke was primarily a farming community until the mid-nineteenth century. Situated on the Hadley Falls, where the river drops almost 60 feet, “Holyoke became a prime location for the textile and paper mills that transformed this rural backwater into a hub of New England's industrial economy.” 1
