ABSTRACT

The Pentecostal religion of African Americans reflects a subcultural strata that has been sparsely analyzed. Although the overall style of worship may be similar, the size of the congregation, location of the church, doctrine of the organization, and community involvement characterizes varying pentecostal churches, as do the establishment of churches and fellowshipping. Salvation experiences of members have enriched the lives of African Americans. Many of the leaders are creative problem solvers, explorers, and charismatic. Their members are given opportunities to excel and pursue diverse interests. Music allows for cooperation in gospel workshops. Plays are performed by youth and young adults. Women are furnished opportunities in all areas of ministry. This general religion section illustrates how values are kept and shared in African-American religion, especially HolinessPentecostal churches in the United States.
